Riff, You may want to check out your comment on Opel. Adam Opel is a company with a rich history that now includes ownership by General Motors since the post-WWII period. The history of the company goes back to 1898, with Adam Opel's sons forming a motorized carriage works in 1897. This carriage works was formed from Anhaltische Motorwagenfabrik - a company noted for its massive motor cars. Opel's first car was built in 1898. By 1937, the company had captured over 40% of the German car market. Other noteworthy achievements include collaboration with NSU (of Dr Felix Wankel's rotary engine fame) and the "mini Corvette" known as the Opel GT. Too many achievements for a car, but well within the scope of a very old car company.
