The Z rating is only a speed rating and indicates how fast you can drive your car safely without the tires blowing up on you. Z rated tires are for speeds over 150 mph. V rated tires are safe up to 150 mph. So if you don't drive in excess of 150 mph often, I guess you can opt for the cheaper v rated tires..:) http://www.avontyres.com/info/speed.htm has a table for you.
