Subject: Re: Why SAAB antifreeze?

Actually there is a SAAB antifreeze, but it is unlikely the dealer stocks it. The car from the factory uses a specific antifreeze to prevent gallvonic corrosion between the aluminum block and the cast steel water pump. The dealers, who have to routinely dump antifreeze in repairing cars, now have taken to placing the antifreeze in large tanks, with filters, and most of the cars they service have the traditional blue/green/yellow tinted glycol. This tank is filtered, and used to replenish serviced cars. You will likely get a replacement of regular glycol from a multi-brand dealership. The SAAB antifreeze (also used by Mercedes, Jaguar, and VW) respects the chemical properties of the block; contains less free particulate matter; and is generally a good idea for long term owners. It is pale in color with a slight redish tint. I buy mine at VW; and in a pinch at a Mercedes dealer. It is more expensive than the regular blue/green stuff, but I keep my cars for 10+ years. You will hear often that there are only 3 companies in the world making antifreeze, and buy whatever is on sale at you local auto store. This is absolutely true for everyone but the owner of an alloy block-based engine. The water pump to block connection WILL corrode over time if you do not use the right antifreeze. And there are few out there that can grind a new seat because you saved a few pennies. Try the parts department at any VW dealer; Mercedes next. Pale in color with a redish or pink tone. Replace the blue/green/yellow crap. Happy trails. Bill On Wed, 19 May 1999 17:59:16 -0400, scottnopsamuteralt.com (Scott I.
