Since the brush pack and regulator are only held in by 2 screws and you can (JUST) reach to change them without dismantling anything (from underneath) I would try that first. Actually getting the alternator itself off is a pig of a job due to lack of room - I've done both jobs on my 88 9000 T. One took me 10 minutes the other over 2 hours
