Subject: Re: Do I need new tires or snow tires

I swapped the stock 16" wheels off for 15" steel rims with 195/60 Firestone Winterfire tires. Snow tires make driving in the snow an entirely different ballgame. Especially in Boston I expect that it would behoove you to give it a shot. I cannot speak about the Saab, but replacing existing Z rated tires on a previous rear wheel drive car of mine with Dunlop SuperSport 4000's made a decent difference in the snow handling of the car. These are Z-rated tires which are not claimed to be snow tires but do give you some extra traction in the white stuff. The downside of running snows on your stock wheels is that those expensive aluminum rims are exposed to all the salt and potholes of a Boston winter. What is a $50 boo-boo if you clip a curb with a steel wheel can easily be 6x more expensive if you are driving on alloys at the time. You might try checking around at your local dealer and other tire stores, as many of them are willing to store the set of tires that you don't have on the car in order to get your business.
