Hi Michael, You might be better off to put this question directly to Saab in Australia (or wait for an Australian reply to this NG), because, as you say, conditions in that part of the world are like no other. I lived in the ACT and in Sydney 9 years and heard stories about Saab having to put in extra oil coolers for engine and/or transmission oil to compensate for the local (read very hot) conditions. What state do you live in? As you say, very few people down there would be caught dead putting anything thinner than 20w50 in their engine. What were you using before you switched? The only risk I can see is if you park it up in Thredbo in June-August, you might get bad oil flow in the turbo bearings. But the best best is to ask at least three experienced Saab mechanics and see what they think. Post us the result when you get it OK?
