Martine, It may be the throwout bearing or pilot bearing in the clutch assembly. If it happens when there is a speed difference between the engine and transmission input shaft (starting from a stop) while the clutch is being let out, it may be the pilot bearing. If it occurs always when the clutch pedal has load on it (lightly pressed with car in neutral) it is probably the throwout bearing. Also as a precaution, make sure the oil level in the transmission is adequate.
