Dear Mr. Emge: I've been neither to Trollhatten nor Malm–. But I have been to Stockholm and G–teborg, and as I assume you are flying to Sweden from the US, you are likely to have at least a little time to spend in Stockholm. I remember both of these cities with what I hope and believe is a discriminating tourist's eye. My impressions may be of some interest to you. Stockholm is both dignified and lively. Do not fail to visit and tour the Stockholm City Hall (no kidding) -- it's breathtaking. In addition, the Stockholm Archipelago consists of countless islands; arrange a boat ride. Tour some of the residential neighborhoods across the river only a few subway stops away from Gamla Stan (the Old City). G–teborg is a little more bohemian, on the other coast, and criss-crossed by trolley car routes. The museums and public places are marvelous. So is the food, in both cities, in fact. They smoke too much over there, you'll find, but their English outdoes that of most native US speakers. I boned up on a little basic Swedish as a lark before I went and only had one real occasion when I had to use it: with the elderly proprietors of a B&B off the beaten path in G–teborg. It worked! But everyone on whom I tried it out was indulgent, patient, and flattered. I think not many visitors try, but it's not really too alien for an English-speaker. Try it! One final observation: you'll be there close to the summer solstice. When you're way up north, observe the Northern Lights and the nearly endless daytimes: like 18 hours of sunlight, or so I've heard. I made this trip before I became a Saab owner. But I understand why mine loves the cold weather. If you're so inclined, I'd be pleased to hear your impressions when you return Wish you a happy trip! God resa till Sverige!
