I don't know that I agree with your other reply. Certainly, the 9000 temperature guage does spend more of it's time between 1/2 and 3/4 than some other cars. It shouldn't get there "pretty fast", because as soon as the engine temperature is high enough the thermostat will open and allow water through. This is so that the ideal temperature is reached quickly, but after that the stat opens to allow coolant to circulate. This may even temporarily lower the guage reading. As for the guage rising above 1/2 - the reason is that the cooling fan sensor operates when the guage is at 3/4 approx. Some 9000's have a two speed fan, which helps to stop the engine getting quite so hot. There are several things you can do to improve the situation. Firstly, make sure that the cooling fan does actually come on, and that this occurs at approx 3/4 on the guage. It should come on and stay on until the temperature drops to almost 1/2. If sometimes the fan seems intermittent in operation, check the fan wiring, especially the connections to the temperature sender (located behind the drivers' side foglight recess). If all seems good, then there are two things you can do to lower the running temperature. The 9000 is fitted with a 88 degree thermostat (?approx), and there is an 82 degree replacement. This will open earlier, and slow down the temperature rise. You can also upgrade your fan to a two speed version on 9000's (if not already) by changing the temperature sender 2 wire version for a three wire version (my loom had the three connection wires present), adding the second fan relay to the relay box on the wheel arch, and then adding the second speed to the existing fan wiring. This can take two forms, depending on the fan fitted. Some already have a connection for the low/high speed operation, others don't, and it will involve adding a second wire. ThereNeedless to say, as with all parts Saab, it is better to use a genuine Saab thermostat (which is available). -- Regards, Danny http://www.gaggia-espresso.com (a purely hobby site) swap Z for above characters in email address to reply
