Here's my story (It's sad, but true) I did the same with my 97 900 SET (I purchased it w/47000 mi.). A friend of my sister runs an independent garage. I took it for a pre-buy certification check. meaning it's intended for checking used cars before you buy them. so, at 49,000 mi., the independent garage found: 1) cracked power steering hose 2) leaking coolant from thermostat 3) oil seepage and possible coolant from head gasket 4) oil dripping from drain plug. off to the Saab dealer I go, where I tell them, look here 1) this hose is cracking 2) I smell coolant and I see coolant residue on the engine block 3) I see seepage around the head gasket 4) The car is leaking oil when parked. Saab says 1) We replaced the PS hose (NC) 2) We replaced the thermostat gasket (NC) 3) The head gasket seepage is normal. All Saabs do that 4) Tightened oil drain plug (NC) I told them that it was obvious the gasket was leaking and I wanted it replaced. The dealer said they would not do it under warranty as Saab would not pay for that under warranty as it was "normal seepage" I was told if it did leak shortly after warranty they would fix it free. So 59000 mi. I get low coolant warning. I top off, A month later Low coolant again. I drain and refill my self. Now at 61,000 mi. my Saab needs coolant every 100mi. The same Saab dealer says I need a new had gasket ($900 part & labor) I say: what about blah, blah, blah.... They say The seepage at 49000mi was oil not coolant. From 49,000 to 61,000 mi. you didn't complain about a coolant leak. The dealer agreed to pay half ($450) I called both Saab and the dealer back and argued for a few more hours. They would not agree to pay any further for the reasons I just mentioned. So, the moral of the story is. Use an independent. Learn and understand the problems yourself. DEMAND warranty service. Anything not done under warranty, get the dealer to put it in writing on the invoice exactly what you requested and that they refused. I get the gasket on this Monday.
