in the UK '91 and before you can remove the CAT and still pass the MOT. After that you _should_ not pass without a CAT. The Abbot CAT replacement pipe is very expensive, a straight pipe is cheap and any exhaust shop should be able to fit one, but this will change the exhaust note. There is a mid box version on some non-CAT '91 cars, but I think the front pipe is also slightly changed - this would be a realtivly cheap alternative with no 'note' change (from memory I think eurocarparts do one for around the 30 quid mark).
