I agree it is probably an air leak. I have read "Diesel Car" since it first came out and this is a regular feature in the "Dr Diesel" column. The usual answer is to either coat all unions with petroleum jelly (just to prove the point, not as a long term solution) and then to seperate each union and clean and remake the connection. You may find that if you clean and dry each connection on the pipe with the car nose down and wrap each connection with coloured tissue paper that one of them may exhibit the tinyest drop of diesel when checked a few hours later. Other people suggest temporary use of clear plastic pipe to indicate bubbles of air.
