Vehicles that are designed to run in soft surfaces (e.g. sand) use very wide, low inflation tires to distribute the load across as wide an area as possible. Since Snow tires will not actually dig through the snow down to the pavement then a wider snow tire would make more sense. After all, if it's that bad out then the road is iced anyway, and you don't really want to dig to it, you want to stay on top of the snow. Bob
