Subject: Re: Should I buy a 97 900SE Turbo?

Well, I bought a 97 SE Turbo Convertible about 2.5 years ago, with 24,000 miles, and now have 46,000. It's really my wife's car, and we both love it. Great combination of sport, luxury, economy and value for the price. Excellent feature content with the heated memory seats, etc., etc. That being said, we've had it into the shop a fair number of times for niggling problems that took repeated visits to fix: cd changer not working; air conditioning noises; other misc., usually electric-related. Fortunately, all of this was under warranty, as they ended up replacing the entire system (both AC and stereo) 2 or 3 times! I haven't had any problems similar to what you noticed (clutch, steering wheel, etc.) The Saab dealer has been very nice and professional in its dealings with us throughout, I must say, though. Bottom line: From my limited experience, and everything I've read, it seems that Saab powertrains are pretty damned bulletproof, and that the problems you will suffer are not the type that will leave you stranded. But you will suffer them, and they probably won't be cheap. I would buy a Saab again, as I am one of those who got hooked on the make's "personality." But, I would not buy one with 80k miles. I would only get one with some warranty left. If I were buying an older car, I would go Japanese, personally. Best of luck with whatever you do --- and if you go saabin, let us know how it goes... rpm
