Subject: Re: higher octane is good

With the high altitude where you live, many different circumstances come into play than for most of the rest of us. Where I live, near Chicago, 91 AKI octane isn't considered "hi-octane", but mid-grade. 93 is the premium grade. This would be about the same as 97 or 98 RON octane for our European friends. We can't even get 85 octane here, 87 is the lowest grade. The high altitude where you live also means that the turbo has to do more work to make up for the rarified air. When I was visiting Colorado a year ago, I had a Mercury Sable as a rental car. I looked in the owners manual, which mentioned that 85 octane is sometimes available in high altitude locations but recommended that it never be used. 87 octane was the recommended minimum grade and they stated that the recommendation also applied to high altitude areas. I would say that the same would also hold true for a Saab - maybe even moreso if it is turbocharged.
