It was not a generalisation, you are an exception and I too have met other Germans whose English was OK. The fact that English is taught in school in Germany does not mean that people actually speak English and certainly not on a high enough level to communicate in a newsgroup like this. We have had student exchange programs from NL to D and for the German students it was very difficult to communicate with the Dutch students in English - and not because the Dutch students' English was not good enough.... It is not for nothing that e.g on Ebay Germany (http://www.ebay.de ) many sellers ship/sell to Germany only because otherwise they have a communication problem. Cause of the problem is I think German television where almost all films are dubbed in German and consequently people are not as exposed to the English language as people in Holland are, where all TV/movies are in the original language and subtitled. For this reason my son could understand English at age 8-10, because he watched cartoons like the Simpsons or South Park (.... well, a certain basic kind of English...). Did you ever hear South Park in German on RTL 11 ? - Scheisse Kenny, das war's, Ich geh' nach Hause... (besides in English and Dutch I can make myself perfectly understood in Spanish, German, French and years ago also in Indonesian) > the only country that probably doenst speak so much secondary languages > would probably be the USA, True, but there is not much need for it (demonstrated almost daily by their fearless leader 'Dubyah'....). The USA is a >big< country the size of Europe and their largest neighbour is (mostly) English speaking too. In Europe allmost all countries have different languages, inmagine that were the case in the USA; every state another language. ------------------------------------------- MH '72 97 '77 96 '78 95 '79 96 http://go.to/saab96
