I haven't tried the 3-series yet, and to be honest, I don't think I will. It only has AWD on the sedan, which looks to me like an upscale Jetta. No thanks! The coupe is beautiful IMHO, but a little smallish, and the RWD means it's locked in the garage when snow falls. In PA, as a daily driver, that's a no-no. Personally, I find the X-Type intoxicating. All the more so because I can actually *afford* one. I share your feelings about German interiors, though. Mercedes, for all it's class and taste, really doesn't do much for me until the price tag jumps over the $60,000.00 mark, which is well out of my range. I found the Saab to be quite comfortable, stylish, and above all, functional. I just don't know if I could learn to live with that ignition key placement... ;-) > I actually think the Audi has the most elegant design of the bunch. The BMW > is a bit too stubby these days. And God only knows what Bangle has in store > for the 3-series going forward. I doubt much, honestly. It seems to be topping out everyone's lists as best in class, so I don't think they'll mess with it much. Still, it's just another Beemer, and a "cheapie" Beemer at that. Squelched. The Audi, I dunno... I've always considered Audi the red-headed step child of German engineering, and their style does absolutely nothing for me at all. The interior may be the best of any car on the road, but if I can't look at the car from the outside and get excited, I'm going to have a hard time getting all gushy about the interior. The Audi just leaves me cold. > > A car that > > *looks* fast. > > Hopefully without the addition of giant spoilers...? Oh, Lord, absolutely. Oh well. Still, you get the idea! (snips) > And if there's nothing that bites you even a *little*, it becomes a bit of a > sterile driving experience. I hear what you're saying that way... I've read reviews of a few new Porsches where they complained that they couldn't do anything to get the car away from them... that it was "too responsive", you couldn't smoke the tires if you tired, couldn't get it to fishtail, etc. And while I agree with that, one of the last places I think I'd want to look for that little "experience" is with torque-steer. Oversteer, fine, burning rubber or outright slides are one thing, but fighting the wheel under acceleration, no thanks. I've yet to test drive it, but I have heard that at worst, it's manageable and not really a problem. > Yeah, bad cars do not sell these days, period. They're all great cars, and > it's more of a function of what you like. I'd be curious to see what you go > for in the end. I'll certainly let you know. As it stands right now, it's pretty much a battle between the 9-3 and the X-type. Honestly, with it's AWD and classic Jag styling (which I've always had a soft spot for), the X-Type is ahead. -- The Conquistador http://www.Footballguys.com http://www.NewsgroupFantasyLeagues.com "Nothing speaks for the arrogance of Man more than the notion he is alone in the Universe"
