So, if I bought a 2 year old Saab which had been running mineral, I'd have no qualms about switching to synth (and definitely would). The seals are still young and supple, and will work fine. If, OTOH, the car is 15 years old, and has been running mineral for the last 10 years+, the seals will be old, and will have absorbed a large amount of plasticising compounds from the mineral oil. Replacing the mineral oil with synth results in these compounds being lost into the synth, and the seals (which are no longer young and supple) shrink. Please don't take this as gospel - this is based on my understanding of rubber chemistry, and my experience with Saabs in a non-professional capacity. But it certainly seems to hold true. -- Grunff
