Yeah the original slack rubber sleaving was intact arround the bundle, so I had to cut it to get to the wiring which is when I discovered just how bad the problem was. didn't see quite how grotty the insulation was until, I tried to tape it, and the rest just crumbled like candle wax. Ended up removing what I had to, leaving some so I can see which wire is which.
