I would bet (especially considering the model year) that it is a timing or balance chain / sprockets problem rather than loose pistons or rod bearings. When the chain is slapping around inside the timing cover it can sound like something else to the unitiated. This is not an expensive problem (yet) but could be if you let it go till the chain snaps or skips teeth. -Fred W
