Finally getting around to looking at this radio that now only says "Code" due to the car battery being disconnected for too long.
First step was to remove it and look for a circuit board battery to replace. There was nothing obvious, but I did grab the model number and google up the schematics... It is a Pioneer FX-M2137ZSA and you can find a schematic at the link below.
I will look these over and see if there is anything required to replace, or if perhaps they have used some other scheme to determine it needs to be re-married. What I don't want is for this to needlessly happen again, especially if this might now occur every time the battery needs to be pulled! and yes, I could jump a battery to temporarily keep the code, but that is kind of a work around, and might not always be possible (eg at the side of the road someday)...
