Buyers who want the flexibility to carry cargo, but dislike the conventionality of traditional family wagons or vans, find the ideal solution in the well-equipped Saab 9000. Like all Saab 9000 5- doors, the 9000 CS is a true chameleon, able to instantaneously adapt to a variety of environments and driving demands. New Upholstery and Refinements Lengthen 1996 Standard Equipment List For 1996, the Saab 9000 CS includes a new seat upholstery fabric and design, fashioned of an attractive two-tone luxury velour material. A finer, lighter weave covers the central portion of the seat cushions, while a darker, thicker weave covers the rest of the seat. Leather upholstery is now available as an option. Additional storage pockets have been fitted to the 9000's interior, including a rigid pocket for the owner's manual and document organizer located on the right side of the center console. Front seats have new flexible storage pockets on their forward edge, plus large pockets on the seat backs. An additional two cupholders have been added to the fold-down rear armrest. 1996 Saab 9000 CS Never Cramps Your Style Although the Saab 9000's exterior dimensions seem mid-size, the interior space places it in the EPA's "Large Car" category. Legroom and headroom, front or rear, is extremely generous, while the doors open wide for easy access to any seating position. The high-lifting tailgate provides easy access to a generous 23.5 cubic feet of trunk space. When the occasion calls for extra cargo room, owners can take advantage of Saab's split/fold rear seat design. By lowering the rear seat in its entirety, an impressive 56.4 cubic feet of cargo area are instantly available. Segment-Leading Fuel Economy. Innovative Ecopower Technology Saab's latest refinement to turbocharger technology is the remarkable Light Pressure Turbo, the standard powerplant in the Saab 9000 CS. Introduced for the 1995 model year, the innovative features of the technologically advanced 2.3L, 1 70-hp Light Pressure Turbo (LPT) four-cylinder engine earned it recognition as one of Ward's Auto World's"Top 10 engines of 1995." Rather than relying on vacuum to pull air into an engine, Saab's LPT engine utilizes an exhaust-driven turbocharger to push air into the induction system. The robust 2.3L engine -- with intercooler and Trionic engine management -- is similar to that used in the full-turbo Saab 9000 CSE and Aero, but the LPT requires no Automatic Performance Control (APC) and no boost gauge is necessary in the instrument panel. The LPT engine has a fixed charge pressure regulating valve with boost pressure limited to 0.4 bar, rather than 1.0 bar in the standard turbo engine. The Saab LPT engine displays exceptional smoothness and provides strong, seamless response at all engine speeds, without the typical turbocharger "kick" that appeals to many Saab enthusiasts. The engine behaves much like a larger displacement naturally aspirated engine, especially in the areas of low-end torque and pulling power. However, the LPT's Ecopower features -- four valves per cylinder, intercooled turbocharger, Saab Trionic and a catalytic converter now moved even closer to the engine for quicker heating after a cold start -- give it advantages over a naturally aspirated engine such as lower emissions, reduced noise and fuel economy among the best in the EPA's "Large Car" category. Long List of Standard Equipment A five-speed manual transmission is standard with the 1996 Saab 9000 CS, while a four-speed automatic is available as an option. Stylish new three-spoke alloy wheels and Michelin tires, along with front-wheel drive, give the 9000 CS a secure grip on all road surfaces, even wet or icy. Saab has also added an extensive complement of standard convenience features, including cup holders, a headlight and rear window washer/wiper system, heated side mirrors, and an electrostatic cabin air filter. Saab's renowned safety engineering heritage is woven into every inch of the 9000 CS. From dual airbags to the Saab low-impact crash protection system, the 9000 CS comes fully equipped with life-saving technology. Continuously illuminated low- beam headlights, or other forms of daytime running lights (DRL), although not required in the U.S., have been proven in Saab's native Scandinavia to significantly reduce daytime car-to-car accidents. For that reason, all Saabs sold in the U.S. are equipped with DRLs. Other active and passive safety features on the 9000 CS and every Saab car include anti-lock brakes (ABS), industry-leading 5-mph self-restoring bumpers and Saab's renowned safety cage construction with front and rear crumple zones. The Saab 9000 has been named Sweden's "Safest Car" continuously since 1990 by Folksam, Sweden's largest insurance company. In addition, the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) has rated the Saab 9000 "substantially better than average" for injury loss in its size class. Buyers can specify their 1996 Saab 9000 CS in a stunning Sky Blue metallic with a light gray velour or leather interior. Other exterior color choices are Black, Citrin Beige, Scarabe Green and Ruby Red. Warranty protection for all 1996 Saabs includes four-year/50,000-mile bumper- to-bumper coverage, including 24-hour roadside assistance and free 5,000-mile first maintenance. Perforation coverage extends for six years with no mileage limit. ================== EOF The Saab Network saab@network.mhs.compuserve.com
