My '77 Saab 99 (with A/C) has recently started throwing/breaking the big belt that runs from engine around alternator & A/C compressor. I attributed the problem to a wobbly A/C pulley & tightened it as best I could. When I had it in for water pump replacement I had the mechanic take off the compressor & seriously tighten the pulley & LocTite the screw. I got about a mile from the shop when the belt - she jumps right off! Mechanic sez 1) 99s always throw belts (altho' mine didn't for the FIRST 70k miles!) 2) there was, at one time, add-on belt tensioner pulley fix for it and 3) maybe the aftermkt belt I had on it was wrong. The shop didn't have the right belt, so he put on the "minimal" engine to alternator belt so I could at least make it back home. My questions: 1) any reason aftermkt belts wouldn't work? - if it's a V-belt & it fits, what else is there to it? 2) Anybody heard of that add-on tensioner pulley - anybody know where I can get one? 3) Do 99s w/AC all do this and what have you done that fixed it? (other than dumping the damn car which, at the moment, seems like a real good idea <g>)
