Subject: Overheating '82 900

HI , I have just recently taken over a friends Saab 900Gls. It is from 1982 ish and there's 150k on the clock. Now the weather over here in England has aken taken a turn for the better. It has been in the high twenties for a few weeks now. The car, he no like this. Even when travelling down the motorway at a good 70-80 mph the temp creeps up to around the 1:30-2 o'clock position. The temp can be brought down to the 3 o'clock position by turning the heater on full blast(but this is a little uncumfortable , I have to say). When stopping and then switching the motor off you can hear the water starting to boil instantly, coming out of the overflow tank and staining the floor. Now, there seemed to be no pressure in the system so I replaced the tank filler cap, and things improved a little. There are no other apparent water leeks. The radiator does get very hot to the touch but the fan is not on all the time. I don,t know how much antifreeze is in the cooling system but I have added a good few litres of plain water over the last couple of weeks. I suspect the Thermostat. Is it possible to check for faults or to clean and adjust for wear. The only other disturbing thing is that the tick over is high and I suspect the timing is too advanced, and the motor occaisionally runs on when the ignition is turned off. It is a twin carb model with apparently troublesome and thirsty worn jets. Please Help.
