If it sounds sort of like gravel swirling around in your engine/exhaust, then that's probably detonation. Are you using cheap fuel? Try a tank of higher octane gasoline. Check the ignition timing and make sure it's not overly advanced. Try new plugs and try running some Chevron Techron through your fuel system. If it is in fact detonation, you can damage the engine if you don't correct it soon. (Pull the spark plugs and see if there are any cracked/chipped areas of porcelain around the tips.)
