I had the same problem on my '89 900S.  I recently changed the thermostat
and it completely fixed the problem.  The heat runs hot all the time and
the engine even runs a bit cooler.  It costs $6.99 for the thermostat and
$1.00 for a new gasket and is really easy to install.
