If the oil looks discolored, try draining out what you can and replace with fresh. Don't use synthetic yet;, until you find out if fresh fluid will make a difference. If it seems to help, and if the fluid was dark, repeat the operation a couple of times to flush out most of the old stuff (Run car for a while between changes to mix stuff up). If that doesn't help a lot, find a Saab specialist or a transmission shop familiar with Saab transmissions and have them check it out for you. It may be that the front bands can be adjusted. If you do get it working without too much expense, then put in the synthetic ATF. I've been running AMSOIL synthetic ATF in Saab transmissions for about 15 years, ever since it came on the market. Really helps increase life--current one has 175,000 on it. Also, be sure to check the level of the gear lube in the final drive. Son-in-law didn't, and fluid ran dry. Cost him a transmission (at 200,000 miles) Understand Saab recently reduced price of factory remanufactured automatics. Last one I knew of ran about $1500 in the box, plus a lot of installation. Have to pull engine and transmission, separate, replace, and reinstall. While the engine is out is a good time to reseal places that you can't readily reach while it is in the car.
