Subject: Re: Some '87 9000T Questions

More than likely the AIr Mass Meter on this car is causing the cold start problem. But before jumping on that, all other possibilities must be addressed. When and what brand of plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel and air filters are on the car? Is the throttle position sensor properly adjusted and the throttle plate clean? Is the base idle adjusted correctly? Is the AIC valve functioning correctly? Is the ignition timing right? Are there any vacuum leaks? If all these are right, then suspect the air mass meter, especially if it ends in 005 of its Bosch number. They are available rebuilt for about $200. I have used them for years and they cure the cold start blues on 2.2 LH cars. On the gear shift moving and the torque arm bushings cracked, check the lower engine mounts, especially the front one. If the lower mounts are fine, seldom does cracks in the torque arm require its replacement. I fill its slots with pieces of radiator hose to stiffen up weak ones. I also know of a modification to the front mount travel limiter to prolong the life of the mount and eliminate that excessive shifter movement. Email me if interested.
