Good news would be that you have a bad sender unit. Bad news would be that the bearings are worn. You might pull an oil sample and send to a lab. If you have abnormal metal wear, such as from bearings, it will show up. Cost $15-20, and well worth it. You should consider using synthetic engine oil if you aren't already. Won't replace missing metal, but will almost eliminate further wear. The right choice can also give you much longer drain intervals.
