Jeff, I also live in the usually snowy east, and judging by your email address, probably not very far from you. One thing I have learned over the years is that all season tires are a compromise in every possible driving condition. When purchasing a Saab, you are purchasing a high performance vehicle capable of very good handling and braking. Why would you want to hamstring the fine performance of a Saab with all season tires? Putting compromising, all season tires on a 900SE will make it handle and stop like a Chevy Cavelier. Why would you want to do that? You only need winter tires for 3-4 months at a time. Why compromise the performance of your car for the other 8-9 months? For winter, I would recommend buying a set of four winter tires mounted on steel rims and use wheel covers. Have you noticed how many times I used the word compromise in this paragraph? There are many benefits. First, you can use performance tires in the summer for 65-75% of your driving. This will allow you to fully enjoy the car you are buying. Second, your nice alloy wheels will not be subject to the ravages of winter driving. Third, your car will perform much better in the snow with proper snow tires. Fourth, your much more expensive summer tires will last longer by not being used in the winter months. Wheel and snow tire packages can be purchased for less than $500 from mail order places like TireRack and Discount Tire Direct. Also, buying them already mounted on rims allows easy change over. If you can change a flat tire, you can switchover your snows and save $50-80 per year. This savings will easily offset the cost of the rims less than 3 years of use. Something to think about.
