Subject: Re: Opinion Needed - Saab 900 Series/ 9-3

I have a '97 Saab 900 Se Turbo which I love. - This is now my fourth Saab. I looked at the 9-3 at the Philadelphia Auto Show a couple of weeks ago and researched it some as my wife was looking for a new car. Her Saab lease was running out. The 9-3 looks almost identical to the 900. You would really have to be up on your Saabs to spot one without reading the numbers on the back. The grill is slightly different and I'm told that the interior may be slightly different (the one at the auto show had a 900 interior). The 9-3 does claim to have over 1000 changes from the 900. (I think over 99% are hidden) What seems to be going on is this... The 9-5 will be marketed as a 9000 replacement to go against the BMW 5 series. The 9-3 will be marketed to go against the BMW 3 series. The main changes in the 9-3 seem to be an attempt to use common parts as much as possible for both the 9-5 and 9-3. (Say for instance- the power window motors). This is not the case now. Therefore dealers will have much smaller parts inventories (eventually), and Saab will be able to buy in larger volumes driving down costs. It's a great idea for Saab to do this but if I had the choice of getting a great deal on a 900 which I know is reliable or getting the 9-3 with so many untested components - I would definitely get the 900.
