Subject: '94 9000 CSE 2.0 LPT Overheat?

My wife was driving our car on the way back from visiting my brother in Scotland, we ended up in a traffic jam and the temperature guage started to climb, and didn't stop. The fans weren't cutting in (you can feel them when they do) so we started watching the temp. needle closeley, when it hit the red section up at the top I suggested (as we were at a standstill) that my wife could cut the engine. The lights went out, so she just turned the key back to put the ignition back on without restarting the engine, bingo, the fans cut in, the engine cooled rapidly, we restarted and had no more problems. What was reset by turning the engine off and the ignition almost immediately back on? Any ideas?
