I agree with another poster that manufacturer warranty plans are not necessarily big money maker for the manufacturer. As they pointed out, the plans are at least partially customer retention plans. As a self employed person who periodicvally buy a new vehicle for business use, I buy the extended warranty for teh time I plan to keep the car or truck. With some of the vehicles I have had, the warranty was a complete waste; other dang near would have broken a bank. To me it is just plain good business sense to fix as many business expenses as possible. This way, I know what those expenses are and how much (something I can't say about my tax payments.). I have a good working relationship with the dealer I have dealy with for almost 20 years. They know that when my vehicle comes in, it is costing me money because I can't work without a vehicle. Two days of lost income will cover the cost of a deluxe warranty. With the factory warranty plan, I have always gotten a substitue vehicle immediately even if the sales manager handed me the key to his car for as long as a week. The dealership knows they will get paid and I will be back to continue doing business with them. I will olso point out that my business periodically involves me in a dispute between auto owner with other warranty plans and someone who is repairing the vehicle. Except for cases where a vehicle has obviously been abused and maintenance neglected, the manufacturer's warranty plans have been much more inclined to pay for a questionable repiar for a curtomer than any of the non-manufacfturer plan. My advice is do not buy the extended warranty unless you intend to drive the car well beyond the limits of the basic warranty. You also won't need it if you keep a pretty good rainy day fund around - most people don't. If you buy an extended warranty, there is only one reasonably certain way to go and that is the manufacturer warranty if you want to limit your out of pocket to a known amount. That also rules out any dispute as to whether a particular part is someone else's responsibility.
