If your engine is in good shape, then changing to synthetic will help reduce wear to a minimum. I've changed many engines to synthetic with over 100,000 miles on them, and had no problems. On the other hand, if it is leaking or otherwise bad, and putting synthetic in it would double the value of the engine (or the car)-- then don't<g>.
