After posting it in this newsgroup and talking to my mechanic, I got the good news: you need a transmission overhaul. Your synchromesh is going on your 3rd gear (and mine), and it will eventually start affecting your other gears (I find 1st pops out occasionally too). So you need either an overhaul or a new transmission. My mechanic says he can fix it for about $1000 CAN. I've had the problem now for 6 months, and it doesn't seem to have gotten much worse - you can keep the gear from popping out by holding it in (with some force) while decelerating. I find it won't "crunch" into gear if I shift it slowly and gently. However, it is something you'll have to deal with eventually. Good luck! Jeff.
