I had the same problem at my 900 turbo, '83 mod. It was the turbo that caused the problem. I'm 99 % sure that if you get a new turbo, it won't happend again. I don't know why it happends on sudden stopps, but it was like that in the beginning at my car too. In a while this smoke problem will get worse. If you want to be 100 % sure, check the exhaust-outlet on the turbo. (You'll have do dis-mount the exhaust pipe from the turbo). If it is very sooty inside, then you know it for sure.
