Hi, I have a 93 900 with the tan top...it began to wear around the supports about 3 years after i had the car. I took it back to the dealer and they called in the regional manager to look at it. He said that there was a problem with the design of the supports and that what was causing the top to wear. He was very nice and had saab pick up the charge for the replacement top. They also installed rubber ballasts over the metal supports. The service manager told me that the cost would have been about $1500-$2000 . Since I didn't have to pay, I didn't pursue the exact cost....but the price you were quoted seems MUCH too high!!!! I hope this helps you.
