I had the same problem with an '89 900. The shifter can get out of
adjustment. The dealer adjusted it and it was fine for about 3 days, then
started again. After 2 more adjustments, it was OK. There seemed to be a
tradeoff between easy selection of 5th, and getting the reverse lockout to
work. Another possiblilty on the older design shifters is that the
locating spring has badly corroded or broken. It can be replaced.
