I religiously change the oil at intervals of 2 to 2.5 k, and have sometimes done so at 1k when the vehicle was newer. I would agree w/ poster CH, that conamination is the issue. So too does a local radio/TV mechanic. As well as the SAAB dealer in town, who remarked that I changed my oil the way he changed his. I believe him, and the telling part of that remark is that he did not believe the factory recommendations either. Dirt is dirt. If your oil becomes darker, it's showing signs of collecting debris. Query, if you use synthethics, and change oil only every 12k, and if you use Techron to keep your fuel injectors and valves clean, what do you do about the Techron recommendation about no more than five treatments between oil changes? (And Techron will dirty your oil, especially the first few times you use it)
