Check this. I know it sounds daft but give it a go. Lift up the carpet in the
passenger footwell and stick your hand in towards the gearbox. If you find a
broken spring you have found your problem. There's a small 5th gear locating
spring and it sounds like yours is ready to snap. If it does so you won't be
able to get it into 5th easily at all.
The good news is the spring costs about 1.50 sterling
