Whether you use regular or synthetic oil does not matter. The oil and filter change interval of 3000 to 5000 miles between changes remains the same. Why? Because both regular and synthetic motor oils have additive packages. These additives help maintain viscosity, clean internal parts, carry away various chemical build-up from the heat and pressure inside the engine and maintain the stability of the oil. It only takes 3000 to 5000 miles for these additives to wear out. When this happens the motor oil cannot do what you want it to, and you begin to get internal damage. My metallaurgist friend complained because he only got about 90,000 miles (150,000KM) from his engine before his crank went. Changing the oil and filter every 12,000 miles or 20,000Km just does not cut it. Ken Washington 87 9000S
