Well, what if one just enjoys the challenge of rodding an old 900? I've got an 8-valve '85 myself, and I've had some thoughts lately of swapping the engine for some crazy unit like a Jag XK (one of which I've run across for cheap). I'm convinced that it's theoretically possible, although I haven't thought about it seriously enough to consider weight issues, possible tranny swaps, and the like. Of course, sense tells me I should just get a beat-up XKE or something. Which is perhaps the only time "sense" has ever said something like that to me or anyone else. Fun project though, don't you think?
