If this is any consolation for the noise, I started to get the same whine in my '88 Merkur XR4ti almost 3 yrs, 20k ago (actually the noise sounded like there was a police siren about a mile back - was always looking in the mirror). Keeping the oil up, and heavy as suggested, seemed to do the trick, since when I swapped the Merkur for a 9000 a few months ago the turbo was still churning away. Miss my Merkur, but love the Saab, kdb
