Right now I think your only option IF you want to use the CD controls in the radio head, is to get the Saab unit. The reason only the Saab unit will work with the radio is because of how the CD changer interfaces with the radio. The 9-5 effectively has two LANs in the car. The I-bus and the P-bus. The I-bus connects the Radio, CD, DICE, TWICE, MIU, PMM, PSM, ACC and a couple of other control units together. Info from the the CD changer is sent in packet form over the LAN(I-bus in this case) to the Radio Head where it is amplified and played on the speakers. So an aftermarket CD changer would have to be compatible with the I-bus protocol to work. My bet is that this is not going to happen anytime soon. The installation process on the factory unit consist of mounting and pluging the unit in. The second part is to "marry" the unit to the I-bus for that car. This action can only be done with the TECH II scan tool. So even if you buy and install the unit yourself, it will still not work until the unit is "married" to the car. The good news is once the unit is married to the car, IT CAN NOT be used in another car without first being "divorced" from the married car first. The radio is the same way. So the days of radio codes after the battery goes dead are gone. The only aftermarket option would be to fit a CD changer that send a signal via a transmitter to the antenna and is controled by seperate controls (not by the ones on the radio). I would not recommend this option. I think the potential for RFI/EMI problems exist. Besides, if you get the factory unit, you will get a warranty from someone you can find. If you get an aftermarket unit and it breaks then what will you do? Good luck, Steve Crowe ASE CMAT/L1,. Saab Quailified Level Tech Frederick, MD sjcrowenopsams.com
