Dennis, Check the wire connections at the thermostatic switch in the radiator. Before my A/C compressor clutch went, I had an over heating problem on a trip to New York. As long as the A/C ran the car survived. After I got back to Maryland, I took the car out for a run. When I got back to the house, I noticed the main fan was not running. Turned out one of the wires to the thermostatic switch was loose. As soon as I plugged it back in, the main fan kicked in and the engine cooled. I was lucky. The next day the clutch on the A/C compressor went out, so I had to disconnect the compressor, which also meant I only had one cooling fan. As to why your A/C cuts off. First, run the diagnostic. Let your motor warm, and with the A/C on press the vent and auto buttons. It should run through its cycle and give you codes, if there are any. If your system is icing up, sounds like the expansion valve may be bad or the low pressure switch located with the receiver/dryer and expanison valve may be bad. I got to watch the installation of A/C compressor about a month ago. Good luck Ken Washington 87 9000s
