My 96 900 SET had a similar problem. Very hard to switch to reverse. I could try the 4.th then reverse to engage. Solution: They have changed the linkage to the gearbox. Now it's perfect. Also the mechanic said i had the older link? Probably they have fixed some problems on it in time. Hope this helps.
