Chris, I own an 88 9000T with 148,000 miles on it. Last fall I moved from North Carolina to Connecticut, I had similar problems with the fan. My experience started with the windows fogging, and the smell of antifreeze when ever I had the fan on. The fan would run, then slow down, and stop. The Saab service facility claims that due to a leak in the heater core, antifreeze leaked into the fan and caused it to go. This also affected the foam thermal insulation in the box surrounding the fan/core. When the fan started, tiny pieces of foam would come out of the dash vents. I had the heater core, and fan replaced, plus the mechanic re-lined the box with new foam. All appears to be working great again. I've since found a Bosch repair facility that is a lot more friendly, a little more reasonable with their service rates, instead of the local dealer.
