Subject: Re: 9000 Exhaust
Used a manufactured exhaust system for my 1986 9000 Turbo.
Is now 3.5" straight through, one banger box, old cat, small open design
muffler at the end. To that was added :
- open the air inflow by enlargening the airbox opening.
- dyno tune the engine to suit, cannot use the recommended factory
setting any more, but car has a reliable 180bhp now, and is also much
easier to drive in heavy traffic. Average fuel consumption is still about
11.5 - 12 litres per 100k. (not sure what the mpg conversion is).
All this was done at a turbo specialist speed shop I knew. They
specialise in the GTP or showroom class racing preperation for japanese
cars in Sydney. (WRX etc.; did a fantastic job). Only drawback is a
little more noise. On full acceleration, car sounds a bit like a V8 Chev
now, rather than the usual deathly quiet SAAB. Goes like the proveriable
barn doors now though.
Total cost: About $600 AUS ($= to about $250 US). Try to find a reputable
speed shop near you, and see what you can work out. My 9000 is now
fantastic on long trips, uses very little fuel (is mostly only just above
idle on the open road Return to Main Index
