Subject: 900S modifications...

Hi, My car is Saab 900S yearmodel -92. It has turbocharged 16-valve engine, compression ratio is 9:1 (same as T16), no intercooler, no APC-system, and it produces 145bhp (stock). Turbocharger is produced by Mitsubishi, and it's watercooled. (This model is also known as low-pressure turbo). Maximum pressure used by charger is 0.45 bar. So, I'm going to get some extra power out of my engine as cheap as possible. But, first I'll need some extra information about these (saab) innovations. What is this APC-system (is knocking control one part of this system? )? Is it needed, if I'm going to increase the pressures of the turbocharger? In this engine there exists no APC-system, but do I really need one if I use always high-octane gasoline? Basically, this engine is same as T16: same pistons, same compression-ratio, same fuel-devices and so on. As far as I know the only differencies are; turbocharger (mitsubishi vs garret), intercooler and of course APC-system. How hard is this APC-system install to this engine, if it is possible? How high turbo-pressure is it safe to use (with proper intercooler) in this engine ? What about knocking? (no knock-sensor in this model, I think). First I am planning to build proper intercooler and install it. After that I'm going to increase to turbo pressure up to 0.8 bar. With these modifications I'm hoping to get about 30 extra bhp out of my engine. So, your opionions are needed. If you have some advice or ideas how to modify this engine please let me know. thanks in advance, Tommi Kalmari (University of Jyväskylä, Finland)
