Subject: A/C compressor on 1987 9000 Turbo

Hi all. I just replaced the A/C compressor on my 1987 9000 Turbo after the original one froze up and am wondering what type of refrigerant it uses. I started to put in R-12 but the head pressure seems rather high (275-300 psi) for this type of refrigerent. Suction is at 35/40 at idle and is still low. Am I using the wrong type of gas? Is there a clogged filter/dryer? The condenser fan seems to be operating ok and I pulled a good vacuum beforehand. Any suggestions? Thanks Joe
